30 Family Camps Across the U.S.

by Sharron Pankhurst
Why not save airline fees and airport hassles this summer? Weeklong, Weekend, Grandparent/child—so many choices, so little time. Find a camp offering your family’s style of fun and is an easy drive from home.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Calumet Lutheran Camp and Conference Center (West Ossipee, New Hampshire). Camp has Calumet En Español to assist in Hispanic family enrollment and offers a SPECIAL NEEDS CAMP July 13-19 and/or July 20-26.

Camp Cazadero Performing Arts Camp, Cazadero (located in the Redwoods of Northern California) with a performing arts emphasis—offers specialized residential camp, “Young Musicians” (7 week continuously running program).

MOST UNIQUE:
Operation Purple Camp, a free summer residential camp for Military kids (see family camp “YMCA Storer Camps” in Jackson, Michigan). Sponsoring a child or two would contribute to your summer and model a giving heart to your children.

WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT?
—Dad & the Boys (Arrrrgh!)
—Mom & Daughter (Girls Just Wanna Have FUN)

Just this year, send Dad and the boys to a camp of their choice while Mom makes it a girls only adventure. Turn it into an exciting family time when you reunite by setting up a tent in the backyard for a weekend of comparing notes. Roast hot dogs and cook S’mores on the BBQ. Teach each other a song you learned. Make a memory for the kids by giving each a prize…Who had the funniest experience…Who did something brave…Who learned a new skill…define your own “Who…” list.

Although MAP has not visited every camp, we did the next best thing. We reviewed the Website content and then called the camps to verify information. Almost all camps offer residential programs for kids; we were looking for camps that offer week or weekend FAMILY programs.

If a camp grabs your attention, call them for availability and book the camp.
